Gambler's Choice Hunter Derbies - Rules & Information
The Gambler's Choice Hunter Derby is an event where exhibitors can choose their own course. Each jump is assigned a certain point value based on height, difficulty, and location. The rider who accumulates the most points, (jumping a maximum of 15 jumps within 4 minutes) will be declared the winner. Jumps can be taken from either direction and will include a variety of verticals, walls, logs, coops, barrels, straw bales, square oxers, etc. A single obstacle can only be jumped TWO TIMES within the round. If a fence is knocked down, no points are earned for that jump, and it cannot be jumped again. At the conclusion of each Gambler's Choice round, a horn will blow, and the rider must walk. The competitor then has the option to retire (wave to the Judge and exit the ring) OR gamble to increase their score by taking the “Joker Fence”. This jump can only be jumped ONCE at the end of the round and will be the largest jump option, highly decorated, and will have the highest point value. If the horse clears the Joker fence successfully, those points are added to the final score. However, if the Joker fence is knocked down, the points will be subtracted from the total earned. In addition to the accumulated jumping points, the judge will score the round (out of a possible 100 points), taking in consideration: Handiness, Hunter Style, Pace and Performance. One Warm-up ticket per horse. Once a horse is entered for either derby, it may NOT be scratched once the class has started; Extenuating circumstances should be brought to the show management. Prize money 1st-6th place, awards and long ribbons 1st-10th place according to accrued points. Awards ceremony to follow each allotted Derby time frame.
